UK Domain Names 24/06/2008

UK DomainsFollowing my last post, just a few hours ago I received an e-mail asking me about where the best place to buy and sell UK domain names is. So I thought a quick post about my favourite sites for UK domain names might be useful to those interested.

For buying and trading any UK TLD’s (.co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, etc) I would recommend checking out a forum called Acorn Domains, its by far the busiest community for UK domains, and is a good place to start with buying, selling and discussing UK domains.

The leading site for domain name auctions is Sedo, whilst it is possible to pick up the odd bargain on there you will usually be paying a premium price for domain names on there, as they’re generally public auctions with a lot of interest.

In terms of registering new domain names my personal preference for UK domains is 123-Reg, they are one of the cheapest available and I’ve always found their service to be pretty good. For other domain names such as .com, .org and .net I prefer to use a company called GoDaddy who are USA based, again great prices and I’ve always found good service.

To check current registration stats of UK domains its always best to go to the horses mouth as they say, Nominet is the internet registry responsible for all .UK domain names so checking the WHOIS with them is the most reliable method. I’ll make another post soon about the UK domain registration process and other issues like drop-catching domains and the renewal cycle for domains.

Thanks for reading! Greg

I’m the same with registration. I used to go with oneandone.co.uk but they’ve put up their prices so I’ve gone back to 123-reg. And godaddy in the US

I use fasthosts for my dedicated server because they have a great feature for remote access of your server (like ILO for those familiar with HP servers)

I’ve always been with 123-Reg for my UK domain names and never had any problems or complaints whatsoever, likewise with GoDaddy for .com domains. Thanks for your comments Domain Name Soup :)
