DesignForums.co.uk 24/06/2008

Back in February I purchased the domain name DesignForums.co.uk from a Sedo auction for just under £300. Probably considered to be a very small amount in the domain name world, that was quite a lot to me as I’ve only ever purchased domain names for under £50/$100. So why did I buy what is essentially just a domain for £300? Well theres several reasons…

  1. Its a keyword rich domain name, so once a site is launched the obvious search phrases for a design forum would be ‘design forum’ and ‘design forums’
  2. Its a good TLD (Top Level Domain) domain names with the extension .co.uk are becoming more and more popular, and valuable, I personally believe they can be more valuable than the .org or .net extension following behind the best TLD of .com
  3. Its descriptive, although very obvious, the domain name will describe exactly what the site is about, my plans are to create a community specifically for UK designers, as they say ‘it does what it says on the tin’
  4. Its brandable, unlike some keyword rich domain names, this one remains brandable, being just two words it will allow me to create a logo and identity around the name.
  5. Its an investment, as domain names seem to be continuing the trend of becoming more expensive as less are available to register, I thought this would be a good investment opportunity.

So that sums up my main reasons for my biggest domain purchase to date. I have some exciting plans for how I will be delivering my new site, but more on that to follow as and when I get time to work on the new site!

Why not leave me a comment telling me the most expensive domain name you have ever purchased, and why? Thanks for reading! Greg
